LEXINGTON, Ky. -- While the college basketball world was searching for answers, Billy Gillispie was searching for players.
The University of Kentucky basketball coach hit the recruiting trail yesterday, a day after his first loss as the Wildcats' coach -- Gardner-Webb's 84-68 thumping of UK at Rupp Arena -- sent shockwaves across college hoops. Gillispie declined an interview request through Scott Stricklin, UK's associate athletic director for media relations, via a text message.
It read, "Gone recruiting."
But any player Gillispie lands will be part of a long-term solution, and, as evidenced by Wednesday night's loss, the Cats have plenty of right-now problems.
Gardner-Webb's win might have been the most shocking result in UK's Rupp Arena history, given that the Cats were ranked 20th in the nation and that the Runnin' Bulldogs won just nine games last season, when they ranked No. 265 in the Ratings Percentage Index
