UK fined for Violation

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky has been fined $25,000 for its second violation of the Southeastern Conference’s access to competition area policy, the league announced today.

The fine is as a result of fans storming the field after UK’s 40-34 win last Saturday night against the University of Louisville.

At least one fan was injured. Connor Leach, the 14-year-old son of UK radio play-by-play announcer Tom Leach, broke his arm in two places when he fell from the stands onto the field, Tom Leach said.

Connor was pushed by fans trying to storm the field, Tom Leach said.

Also, in a situation that could have become ugly, a pair of fans walked into the line of Louisville players exiting the field and playfully pounded two players on the shoulder pads.

Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe, who was watching his players as they exited the field, yelled for the police to take care of the fans.

They were escorted off the field.

UK’s first offense occurred last season after a 24-20 win against Georgia.
The policy, approved by all 12 SEC institutions, imposes financial penalties for violations in all sports at the discretion of the Commissioner.

Institutional financial packages range from $5,000 for a first offense to fines of up to $25,000 for a second offense and up to $50,000 for a third and subsequent offenses.

“The University of Kentucky takes its responsibility to protect participants and spectators at its home athletic events seriously,” UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart said. “The incredible energy and passion Wildcat fans displayed at Commonwealth Stadium Saturday night were integral parts of the victory over Louisville. We’ll continue working to ensure a safe environment for our players and fans to celebrate future wins.”

Re: UK fined for Violation

Stormin the field is not as safe as it once was. If it was years back when people did it somewhat safely, then I would go for it. Although I would say they should have taken into account certain situations such as in-state rival games(especially when one team hasn't beaten another team in quite some time). Same goes for big conference rivals i.e. KY vs TN.

Anyone else have thoughts.

I am sorry to say that I have to agree that fans should be kept off the field. Unfortunately there are way too many poeople that have the me,I attitude. These individuals would willingly step on anyone that may have fallen down.

I hate to say that the lend a hand attitude is so far removed from main stream society. There are plenty of good people out there who would help another at all cost but the numbers in this group are dwindling.

OK, I'm sorry I'll get off of my soapbox now.
