Sweeney, Riske & Perez Become Free Agents

The Kansas City Royals saw two major members of their 2007 team become free agents today. First baseman Mike Sweeney's contract ran out and reliever Dave Riske enters free-agency after a stellar performance in the bullpen.

Riske pitched as a set-up man for the Royals with a 2.45 ERA and four saves. He went 1-4 in 65 appearances this season. He should be able to get a sweet deal in free-agency from someone looking for a good bullpen arm.

Also, according to MLB.com, "The Royals announced they have declined their option to re-sign left-handed pitcher Odalis Perez for 2008. The option was reportedly worth $9 million with a $1.5 million buyout, half of which would be paid by his previous club, the Los Angeles Dodgers."

I would have to think that Sweeney is going to retire. He's too chronically injured for anybody to take a chance on him.
