The Few, the Proud, the Royals fans

This is from a blog discussing Kansas City Royals fans. Enjoy!

Quote:
Royals Fans, I Salute Thee
The Royals are consistently horrible, they're practically ten games out by April 15th each year. Sure, I complain about losing enthusiasm for the Mariners, but we had a darn exciting four or five months there, and that can tide me over through the end of the season. How hard must it be to cheer for the Royals?

Well, apparently, it's pretty hard. I was reading the box score for yesterday's game, and I noticed the attendance at the bottom: 9,817. Not even ten thousand people could be bothered to show up for a game on a lovely Sunday afternoon. Compare this with the 32,951 fans who made it to a Tuesday night game at Safeco, against the Devil Rays. Now I'm not completely naive, I realize that the Mariners may not be the biggest draw for folks in Missouri. So I checked on some other attendance stats for the Royals, who I'm increasingly starting to feel sorry for. It didn't get much prettier. A game against the White Sox- you know, the defending World Series champs- on a pleasant Saturday evening drew a paltry 18,028 fans. Even the Yankees, who draw all the fancy businessmen and the "isn't-Jeter-cuuuute" people who don't even care about baseball, couldn't break the 30,000 mark. The highest total of a New york at KC game was 27, 123. I bet it felt like at least 20,000 of those people were rooting for the Yankees. In contrast, an average of 42, 823 fans were in attendance at each of the M's/Yankees games at Safeco. And that was in August, after everyone had pretty much given up.

Now, I know there are other factors, besides losses, that influence attendance- Kauffman Stadium is really old, and this team doesn't exactly have a ton of superstar names. My neighbor, a Giants fan, recently said, "I don't think I could name even one player on the Royals." I just laughed at first, but then I realized I can barely name any Royals...
Ouch, that's pretty rough. But how dedicated do those 9,000+ who came to see the Royals play the Mariners have to be? I mean, those guys are true fans, right? Willing to see their lousy team play another lousy team on a Sunday when the Chiefs and Broncos are playing.

Cool Re: The Few, the Proud, the Royals fans

If the Royals won, people would come. There are too many other entertainment options now for people to pluck down their hard earned dough to see a minor league team try to compete in the majors. For a team like KC, it's a shame because they do have a good history.

History will repeat itself.

Not with George Brett but another superstar named David DeJesus? He is the best player in my opinion in their organization right now.
