Q: Are the Royals actually on the right track?

Well, the Royals still have the worst record in baseball. Their record since I came to town 10 years ago is 656-939. So it doesn’t seem too wise to get excited.

But there are some good signs. Really. General manager Dayton Moore has brought in talented baseball people. A few young hitters are emerging — third baseman Mark Teahen, center fielder David DeJesus and first baseman Ryan Shealy among them. The Royals have two of the best prospects in baseball (Alex Gordon and Billy Butler) and this year’s No. 1 pick, Luke Hochevar, has been impressive early on.

And you know what? Since May 13 — when the Royals were on pace to match the record of the legendary 1962 New York Mets — the team is 36-41. OK, no, you’re not going to make brochures about a 36-41 record, but compared to this team in recent years, that’s more than just moderate improvement. And if the bullpen had been better …

“I know Royals fans don’t want to hear this — they’re tired of hearing this,” manager Buddy Bell says. “But I’m really excited. We are getting better.”

You know, call me crazy, but I tend to believe that - yes - maybe the Kansas City Royals are getting better. I'm particularly impressed with Teahen, who's been a fantasy stud for me in the past few weeks, and I keep hearing good things about some of their young talent, especially Alex Gordon, Billy Butler and Luke Hochevar. So, what do you think? Are the Royals improving?
