Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen wants to be traded

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen wants out of Kansas City.

He formally requested a trade after contract negotiations broke down over the weekend in Indianapolis, Allen's agent, Ken Harris, said in a phone interview Sunday.

The Kansas City Star reported that the team rejected the request, and Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson told the newspaper that the club plans to tender Allen on March 1, the deadline for teams to submit qualifying offers to restricted free agents.

Ouch. Allen is vastly underrated by most and is a cornerstone of that Kansas City defense. He is young, talented, and has an excellent work ethic. You can't let someone like that leave without getting back ample value.

However, does he really have the grounds to request a trade? If he is looking for the bank-breaking deal this off-season, it is not going to happen. This draft has crazy depth at defensive end, as I like ten to twelve of them to have productive careers, and Allen's recent law troubles are alarming, to say the least. He is a DUI from missing an entire season. Seriously, he needs to step away from the booze or the wheel when doing one of the other.

Slap a first and third round tender on him, then hammer out a contract with clear language concerning the DUI's, which I'm sure is the primary drawback to a deal getting done at this point in time.
