Economic Downturn Leaves Stadium Nameless

Has the economy got you down? Is your 401(k) looking weaker than usual? Is that $600 stimulus check not doing a thing for your bottom line? Well, someone out there feels your pain -- or more accurately, some place, and that place is Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

It seems the Jacksonville Jaguars can't find anyone to buy its stadium's naming rights, and the team blames America's struggling economy for it. The stadium hasn't had a corporate sponsor since Alltel's $620,000-a-year deal expired in February of 2007. The Jaguars are seeking $5 million-a-year buyer -- which is actually a small figure, given that the Dallas Cowboys are expected to receive $20 million a year for the naming rights to their new stadium.

Of course, associating your name with the Cowboys still carries more weight that latching onto the Jags, despite the team's success in recent years. Jacksonville is one of the NFL's smallest markets, and selling the stadium naming rights may be necessary to help the franchise break even in 2008.

Wow, that's pretty sad. At even a quarter of the Cowboys asking price, the Jags can't get anyone to bite on it? Wow.

Yea, which is kind of suprising, the Jags havent been great in the past but they certainly havent been horrible, and with the new contract of garrard they seem to have an even brighter future. You would think an investor would see the potential..

You would think that. How are their attendance numbers? That might have something to do with it.

Not good specially when the gators are playing, most people dont want to go to 2 games a week, or they may be at the same time.

Not only with the Garrard signing but their defense is monstrous. Maybe the best in the league! Yes the Jags IMO are top contenders for the AFC Crown but I think the article may hold some truth in that Jacksonville the city is struggling economically and this could be a reason for their financial struggles. If this team makes it to the Super Bowl then things will start to change. I know that accomplishing that goal is far from easy but they have the talent and since they seem to be underdogs i'll be rooting for a Jags-Giants Super Bowl XLIII.
