Re: Can Matt Jones replace Jimmy Smith?

Jones took over Smith's X-position during Jacksonville's Friday practice, but even he doesn't seem to think he can "replace" the former five-time Pro Bowler. Says Jones, "We don’t have a Jimmy Smith on the team now. We don’t have somebody that’s that good. He was the best route-runner I’ve ever seen and one of the best receivers I’ve ever been around... You can’t really replace him."

Besides Jones, Reggie Williams, Ernest Wilford, Chad Owens and rookie tight end Marcedes Lewis will be looking to try and replace Smith's production in the passing game. Which of them has the best year?

I think they are different types of receivers...Matt Jones doesn't have Smith's finess...though I like Matt Jones...he's a freak of nature with speed...but I think Smith knew the position in and out...you can't replace that...

Re: Can Matt Jones replace Jimmy Smith?

Can Matt Jones replace Jimmy Smith? Yes, I believe so. Jones showed flashes of brilliance last year and I was always a big J. Smith fan (had him every year in fantasy football!) so I believe Jones can replace him but hell have to work as any inexperienced reciever would. However I worry about the #2 reciever of the Jags...Reggie something? Hes average on his best day. If I were the Jags id sign a free agent like Tim Dwight (I know the Jets got em!). That would be perfect...Jones raw physical ability with the polished speed of Dwight. Still there are recievers out there that could be signed who are better than their #2 option.

Reggie Williams is the guy you're thinking of. I'm not real high on him either, but didn't Ernest Wilford have a big season last year? Or am I mistaken? If he's the guy I'm thinking of, him, Jones and Williams, plus Lewis at TE, should be able to pick up the slack.

Cool Re: Can Matt Jones replace Jimmy Smith?

So you guys are thinking Matt Jones is going to bust out this year?...I really like the kid...but I don't see him as a number one receiver yet...what about going for the disgruntled Lelie?...fresh start and that #1 title might do him good...Leftwich has a big arm and can find both Lelie and Jones down field...any takers?...or is Lelie a cancer now?

Yeah Lefty, Wilford was very good but got hurt. I dont know his status for this year, if hes 100% and ready to go than the Jags are in good shape. I like Ernest Wilford...he certainly outplayed Reggie Williams! Then again thats not saying much.
