| Re: Jaguar's Jimmy Smith retires Jacksonville, FL -- (Sports Network) - Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith announced his retirement at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
The 37-year-old Smith retired despite the fact that he caught 70 passes for 1,023 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games last season, numbers that are not reflective of a declining receiver.
"I thought I had another year in me," Smith said. "You guys know I've been going back and forth. It's best to leave on top. Not many guys get to do what I'm doing today; walk away happy."
The Jackson State product ranks seventh on the NFL's all-time list with 862 career catches, and his 12,287 yards are good for 11th all-time.
Smith was signed by expansion Jacksonville in 1995 and enjoyed a breakout season in '96, hauling in 83 balls for 1,244 yards and seven touchdowns en route to an appearance in the AFC Championship Game.
He appeared in five consecutive Pro Bowls from 1997-2001, and led Jacksonville to its second appearance in the conference title game in 1999, a season in which he posted career highs with 116 catches and 1,636 yards. Fabulous career for a guy who was firs tcut by the Cowboys and had a though time getting started. |
