| Jags QB's: On Culpepper When coach Jack Del Rio was asked why the quarterbacks were told of the interest in Culpepper when there's no guarantee the team can sign him, Del Rio said the Jaguars wanted to keep the lines of communication open with their players. Garrard said he appreciated being told. "They don't have to tell you what they're thinking," Garrard said. "Last year and the year before that, I didn't know I was starting. To get this kind of information as early as I did was cool." Explaining the Jaguars' interest in Culpepper, Garrard said: "I was told we have to bring him in to look at him. He has a good relationship with [assistant head coach] Mike Tice from their days together in Minnesota. If I'm the owner and I can get somebody cheap like that, it'd be dumb [not to consider it]." Culpepper was drafted in the first round by the Vikings in 1999, 11th overall, and played there for seven years before being traded to Miami last March. He suffered a severe knee injury in the 2005 season, his last one in Minnesota. Garrard said he was told not to take the team's interest in Culpepper personally and that it wouldn't affect his status. "They said it's not anything directed at me or toward my performance. If [Culpepper] can get back to his Pro Bowl level, that's a top-five quarterback in this league," Garrard said. Still, if they sign Culpepper, Garrard might not have a future with the Jaguars. He started 15 games the past two years. "As long as there are 31 other teams in the league, there's always a chance for any player," Garrard said. Garrard won a fight with Crohn's disease in 2004. In 2005, he signed an extension through 2008 that paid him a $2 million signing bonus. He said he remains upbeat. "Of course, why not? Life is still good. I've still got a job. I've still got my health. I've still got a baby [boy] on the way," he said. But he added, "It's not something you want to go through as a player. I'm not going to fault the organization for trying to do their job. It's a business." Leftwich also could be challenged for his starting job if Culpepper, who tore three knee ligaments in 2005 and still isn't 100 percent, makes a full recovery. "It has something to do with me because I'm in the last year of my contract," Leftwich said. When Leftwich was asked if he expects to be a Jaguar in 2008, he said, "I don't know; I'm not thinking that far [ahead].'' As for this year, Leftwich said: "I plan on playing every snap. I'm not a bum. I can play.'' Del Rio said the team's interest in Culpepper wasn't a sign he's unhappy with the team's quarterbacks.
