| Owens Makes The Team Black Bear gnaws his way into NFL By Michael Felger/ Inside the Huddle Boston Herald Patriots Beat Columnist Sunday, September 24, 2006 It’s shocking how many talented young players arrive at NFL training camps every year and never get it. Montell Owens isn’t complaining, though. If not for them, he probably wouldn’t be playing on Sundays right now. The University of Maine product fought his way from the depths of the Jacksonville training camp roster this summer -- past some of those complacent, bigger-name talents -- to make the team as an undrafted free agent. His role is in the kicking game, and he’s excelled at it. He’s on every coverage unit, and in the Jags’ season-opening win over Dallas, Owens recovered an onside kick to seal the game.
