Hawks Blow Away Boise State

BOISE, ID -- The top-ranked Iowa wrestling team won its 11th straight dual when it beat Boise State, 30-9, in front of 2,812 fans in Taco Bell Arena Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes won eight bouts, including three by bonus points, to snap Boise State's nine-match winning streak and hand the Broncos their second loss of the season. Iowa improved to 18-1 (5-0 Big Ten) this season, while Boise State dropped to 10-2 (7-1 Pac-10).

"The mistakes we are making in finishing positions and the lack of aggressiveness in terms of putting a guy away is huge," said Head Coach Tom Brands. "Our guys need to be ready to go and be strong out there. I don't think we've wrestled our best yet as a team, so we've got work to do. Even though we weren't hitting on all cylinders today and looked sloppy at times, we won some close matches."

Iowa jumped out to a 21-0 lead with wins at the first five weights. Junior 125-pounder Charlie Falck opened the dual with a 20-5 technical fall over freshman Alan Bartelli that ended the match at 5:40. Sophomore Daniel Dennis scored a 6-3 win over junior Cory Fish in his first match of the season at 133. Sophomores Dan LeClere (141) and Brent Metcalf (149) followed with bonus-point victories for the Hawkeyes. LeClere scored a 12-4 major decision over freshman Eli Hutchison, and Metcalf pinned junior Cody Bender in 2:01. The pin was Metcalf's ninth of the season as he improved to 23-1 and scored his 20th straight victory. Sophomore Ryan Morningstar scored a takedown in the second sudden victory period to beat junior Tyler Sherfey, 3-1, at 157.

Boise State scored its first points at 165, when freshman Kurt Swartz beat Hawkeye redshirt freshman Jake Kerr, 2-1. Iowa has posted a 0-8 record at 165 since starter and defending NCAA and Big Ten Champion Mark Perry's knee injury and subsequent surgery. Sophomores Jay Borschel (174) and Phillip Keddy (184) responded with hard-fought wins. Borschel picked up his 11th straight win with a 7-4 decision over sophomore Nate Lee, and Keddy handed freshman Kirk Smith his second loss of the season with a 3-2 victory. The Broncos won their second and final bout of the afternoon at 197, when sophomore Matt Casperson pinned sophomore Rick Loera in 2:35. Hawkeye senior Matt Fields posted his 20th season victory with an 8-3 win over junior Nick Smith at heavyweight to end the dual.
