Hawks Volleyball Coach Resigns

University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta announced today that Cindy Fredrick has resigned her position as head coach of the women’s volleyball program.

Fredrick compiled a record of 46-82 during her four years as the seventh head coach in the history of the women’s volleyball program. Her record in Big Ten Conference play was 9-71 and included a 1-19 record in 2007.

“I have great appreciation for the efforts of Cindy and her staff,” Barta said. “Certain areas of the volleyball program at the University of Iowa have never been better and the improvement in those areas is 100 percent attributable to Cindy’s leadership, drive and commitment. I want to thank her and wish her the very best in the future.”

“It is with regret that I have decided to resign my position at the University of Iowa,” Fredrick said. “My staff and I have made great strides to improve the volleyball program over the past four years. Our student-athletes have been highly successful in the classroom, attendance has seen significant growth, as has participation at our instructional camps, and our competitive level has improved.

“We have some of the best ever recruits for 2008 and, thus, anticipate that the program is very well positioned for success in the near future,” Fredrick added. “I would like to thank our fans, staff, and those parents and student- athletes who have been supportive throughout our four years at Iowa. I wish the Hawkeyes great success.”

Barta said the UI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will begin a nationwide search for a new head coach immediately. He added that he expects interest in the position to be very strong.
