Published stories in Michigan have Ferentz among a list of potential successors to Lloyd Carr, who Monday announced his retirement after 13 seasons at the school.
Barta has heard nothing from Ferentz regarding another job.
"Absolutely, I expect Kirk to be our coach next season," Barta said.
Barta said he and Ferentz talked several times during the weekend and also on Monday, but the discussions never involved other coaching positions.
We talked about several topics, but none pertaining to Kirk coaching elsewhere," he said.
Ferentz's current Iowa contract states: "Coach understands and agrees that he must notify (Barta) prior to discussing any employment opportunities outside the university of Iowa and outside the scope of this Agreement."
Barta said he also expects notification from his peers if Ferentz becomes a serious candidate.
