| Barta promises to revisit importance of educating athletes Iowa City, Ia. — Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said Wednesday night he would re-visit the department’s role in educating football players about life off from the field. Barta’s comments came just a few hours after the university released a statement saying three football players are being questioned in connection with an alleged sexual assault last month at a campus dormitory. The most recent revelation comes during a season in which 11 players are known to have had interaction with police for alleged law-breaking. “We’ve had more than our share (of problems) this fall,” Barta said. “We’ll double back and make sure we’re educating and laying out our expectations.” Barta said: “I think right now, the best I can do is say (the problems are) cyclical, but we don’t take them for granted. We won’t just brush it off. We’ll make sure the educational programs we go through are sound, and we’ll add to them if we think we have to.” Iowa, like most universities, uses experts in fields ranging from police to the media to conduct preseason educational meetings with players.
