Is Baseball still America's favorite past time?

Hi to all. I'm a 40 year old college student trying to do research on "My" favorite past time (baseball). I know to most that this still holds true. Yet after strikes and other downfalls of the sport and hearing friends comment that football might be America's new past time. I decided to do my paper on the subject in hopes to get a better perspective of what other people had for thoughts on the subject. Thanks

I've always thought that this is a fascinating topic.

No, I don't think most people would identify baseball as their favorite sport these days. Yes, part of the problem is the steroid issue, but I think it's deeper than that. Baseball is a long game with a chess match quality to it that doesn't sell well to our attention-deficient society. Plus there are so many other options anymore, with football saturating the cable airwaves and new phenomena like MMA fighting and even Texas Hold 'Em capturing peoples imaginations. I'd say football is king in the sports world and everything else is fighting for the scraps.

Of course, that's not even taking into account other possible, non-sports related "National Pastimes"... American Idol, video games, Internet chatrooms, things like that which have drawn people in the same way watching our favorite sluggers and collecting baseball cards used to hook those of us who grew up with the sport in a byegone era. It all comes down to the same thing, though... there are just so many other options, and so much opportunity for instant gratification, that baseball -- while nowhere near dying -- isn't the featured attraction it once was.

First off, welcome aboard goodtogo.

For me, there is nothing better than a baseball game. It is my national pastime. I live for the reds in the summer. Part of Lefty's reasoning for people disliking baseball is the reason I love it. I am fascinated by the fact that a pitcher can make a batter hit the ball where he wants him to, so he can get the easy out. You have the batter fouling off pitch after pitch waiting for that one mistake to make him pay. This is high drama you can't get on a TV show. I love it.
