The NFL's veteran free-agent signing period began at 12:01 this morning, and the sound fans heard was checkbooks being opened by antsy owners eager to add that missing piece, or two, to their rosters.Don't look for the Indianapolis Colts to join the spend-fest. Team president Bill Polian prefers to re-invest owner Jim Irsay's money in his own players. The Colts have issued one-year, $927,000 tenders to five restricted free agents: guard Dylan Gandy, safety Matt Giordano, defensive tackle Darrell Reid and tight ends Ben Utecht and Bryan Fletcher.
