All Signs Point to Tony Dungy Leaving Colts

Nothing is official yet, but all of the signs out of Indianapolis point to the conclusion that Tony Dungy is going to retire as the Colts' head coach.

Those signs include:
  • Dungy has not committed to returning in 2008.
  • Dungy has said he never wanted to coach past age 50. He turned 52 during the 2007 season.
  • Dungy has said he wants to spend more time with his family. His son has enrolled in school in Florida, which would make that awfully hard, unless Dungy is moving to Florida, too.
  • Assistant head coach Jim Caldwell reportedly declined an opportunity to interview for the Redskins' head coaching job.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk cites a league source saying Dungy is done and will be replaced by Caldwell. If Dungy is done as an NFL head coach, he leaves with a 127-66 career coaching record.

Re: All Signs Point to Tony Dungy Leaving Colts

It's just a gut feeling, but I'm guessing he is done. Unlike other coaches, he's not driven by his job or coaching success. Plus, as vince's post points out, all the signs point to reasons why he could and should step away from the NFL. So I fully expect Caldwell to be tapped as his replacement in the next week or two.
