Because he doesn't have his name in enough record books yet, Peyton Manning is now
the Colts' all-time leader in touchdown passes. He broke Johnny Unitas' franchise record with his 288th touchdown pass today in Charlotte against the Carolina Panthers with a 59-yard bomb to Reggie Wayne.More importantly for the Colts, the touchdown gave them a 24-7 lead, which at that point was pretty much insurmountable.
It's a testament to Manning's longevity as a quarterback, not to mention his ability to stay healthy, something that's become increasingly rare for NFL quarterbacks these days. At one point in the 3rd quarter, Manning was body slammed to the turf by Panthers lineman Kris Jenkins. A lot of QBs might have left the game then, but Manning called timeout, inhaled copious amounts of smelling salts, and went back into the game to lead the Colts on one more touchdown drive. Jenkins' wallet is going to feel a little lighter next week.
In the meantime, Manning plans to celebrate the achievement by filming a commercial for Gatorade. Or Sprint. Or maybe Sony. He hasn't decided yet.
