| The Manning Passing Academy The Manning Passing Academy began its third season at Nicholls State University on Thursday as 1,200 athletes checked in and got acquainted with the rules and regulations of the 12th annual camp. Called the “premier offensive skills camp in the nation,” the camp is run by the Manning family — Archie, Peyton, Cooper and Eli — with help from a host of other big names from the NFL and college football. The four-day session, which is for quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends, attracts some of the top high school football players from around the nation. It concludes Sunday. One of the highlights of today’s schedule is a field dedication ceremony as Nicholls State will rename its field in honor of the Manning family, who donated a new playing surface. The new AstroTurf surface, which was installed in June, replaces a natural grass surface Nicholls State has used for years. “I can tell you from first-hand experience, this is not your father’s AstroTurf,” Archie Manning said. “This is an incredible, state-of-the-art surface that will make a fine addition to the camp and Nicholls.” At 11 a.m. Saturday, fans can watch the “Air it Out” session at John L. Guidry Stadium. The event features a passing and skills demonstration by NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning along with other college and NFL athletes. Last year, former LSU and current Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell took part in the “Air it Out” session. Tickets are $5 and proceeds will go to the Nicholls State athletics department. 2theadvocate.com | Sports | Manning camp begins in Thibodaux -- Baton Rouge, LA |
