| Re: Indianapolis Super Bowl bid Oil Magnate Adds $1 Million Donation To Indy Super Bowl Bid Last Edited: Thursday, 19 Apr 2007, 2:01 PM CDTCreated: Thursday, 19 Apr 2007, 2:01 PM CDT Credit: MyFoxBy MICHAEL MAROT AP Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS -- Forrest Lucas had already paid $120 million to put his last name on the Indianapolis Colts new stadium. So what's another $1 million to hear his name splashed across the television networks Super Bowl week? Lucas announced Thursday he was making the seven-figure investment to help with the city's 2011 Super Bowl bid -- and also to help raise the profile of Lucas Oil. "Nobody wants the Super Bowl here more than I do," Lucas said at a news conference held in what will be the main entrance to the Colts' new stadium. "I think there's a real good chance of that. As sponsors of the stadium, I think we need to do our part to bring it here." Fred Glass, president of the bid committee, expects it to cost about $25 million to host the NFL's biggest game. But after using taxpayer dollars to help fund a $500 million retractable roof stadium, Glass hopes to raise the additional money privately. He also wants the money in hand when the bid committee makes its presentation to the NFL owners in May. Lucas' donation matches the $1 million pledged by Colts owner Jim Irsay and Eli Lilly Co. Glass declined to update how much money has been raised since the city announced in late January it would bid on the game, but he believes the committee will meet its goal. "I think this moves the sticks down the field a good way," he said. "I've been avoiding giving a running total, but we're doing great and we expect the money to be there by May. I'd say we're in the red zone, to use a football analogy." The red zone is a term football teams use when they get close to scoring a touchdown. Lucas said Glass asked for the money. After a five-minute phone call to California, Lucas decided to toss in another $1 million for the Super Bowl bid. With his wife, Charlotte, at his side, Lucas said putting his company's name on the Colts new stadium has already created a higher profile for his business. Having a Super Bowl at Lucas Oil Stadium would only increase the name recognition. Indianapolis is competing against Dallas and Phoenix to host the 2011 game. And, he believes, if Indianapolis does get the game, the Colts could become the first NFL team to play a home game on Super Bowl Sunday. "Indianapolis would probably make a good pick anyhow, but the fact we have a world-class team helps," he said. "Nobody's ever had a home team in the Super Bowl, and I think we'll have a good chance because Peyton (Manning) will still be very good and Jim Irsay, I think, will spend the money to keep the team at this level." The Colts will play next season at the RCA Dome, which they have called home since Irsay's father, Robert, moved the team from Baltimore in 1984. They are scheduled to move across the street, to Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008. Indianapolis has hosted a variety of major events and already has a deal with the NCAA to stay in a five-year rotation for men's and women's Final Fours through 2039. Other big events that the city has hosted this decade include the NBA Finals, AFC championship game, world swimming and world basketball championships, national championships in track and field and gymnastics. It's also scheduled to host the 2008 Olympic diving trials.
