Re: Gay against Tony Dungy?

IFI President Curt Smith said neither the dinner nor the award is political.
"The purpose of this award is to celebrate those who live out the family ethic that we think is at the heart of a healthy and successful society," Smith said. "There was no five-point quiz where he had to agree with us on a number of public policy questions. In inviting him and then following up with a letter, we didn't discuss public policy."

Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family Action, said gay groups would like to silence anyone they perceive as opposing the gay agenda -- even a celebrated athlete or coach.

It's called "Christophobia."

"Unfortunately, this is becoming a pattern for those that oppose Christianity," he added. "They want to control our speech in the public square, embarrass us and try to belittle us. It really is a form of fascism."

never heard the term Christophobia...but sure why not...there should be a term...everyone else has one...

What's the deal here? Tony Dungy can speak/visit where ever he wants...Why the up roar for?

Cool Re: Gay against Tony Dungy?

This is getting dangerously close to a politics discussion.

close...but no cigars...the question was, why is Tony Dungy having to take any sort of flak, he is a coach, he is not taking a political stand?

Hardaway commented on Amechi and it was discussed within the proper guidelines...how is Tony Dungy taking flak any more or less a topic of discussion?

See, that's my point...if he is doing something away from the game...and its got nothing to do with the game...that is his business and not fodder for the press or any group with a political agenda.

I agree with Goth but you know that's not how the world sees it. I don't think Dungy is anti-gay at all. He is a very nice man who is dedicated to his family and the sport of football. I'm sure that he's not even aware of this supposed controversy. CHRISTOPHOBIA??? Is that in the Modern Book Of Mental Disorders? I admit i'm an atheist but I just think some special interest groups just look to be offended such is the case here. Tony Dungy has a reputation as a class act and that reputation will remain untarnished despite this silliness.

I could not agree more. I hate when a group takes the most innocent event and try to tie it to what they are protesting. Leave the man alone. If he wants to speak at an event, it shouldn't be anybodies business.

Now see, we could start a movement against groups that start a movement...sort of an "anti-movement revolution"... ...Kick all politcal groups and agends off the sports page period...of course I would want a cushy leader seat in the movement...

Cool Re: Gay against Tony Dungy?

This is why I think this is turning into politics. Let's just say, that there are some people in this country who champion free speech ---as long as you agree with them. If not, they try to silence you.

Sure, why not...it means, "everything in life (especially sports) does not have a political angle to it"...nothing more nothing less...
