Dwight Freeney free agent

According to NFL.com, the Indianaplois Colts could place their franchise tag on free agent DE Dwight Freeney.

Good move? Will Freeney be a Colt next season?

They need Freeney...you bet they will stick the tag on him...they built their D on quickness....and Freeney is the key to the quickness.

It will be interesting to see if it goes to that extent. Will they reach a deal with him before they have to use the franchise tag? No player likes it and you have to wonder if it will bring any problems with it.

I heard that they're gonna franchise him as well. Didn't the Jets franchise Abraham in 2005 and he held out? Could Freeney do that cuz he will if he can. I heard he wants a lot of $ but the Colts need him. He had a great playoff run that's for sure.

I know players don't like the tag, but I don't understand why. Don't they take the average of the top 5 highest paid players at the position and pay them that rate? It seems like a pay raise to me.

Yes, it's usually a raise, but look at a guy like Freeney. On the open market, he'd probably wind up as THE highest paid defensive end in football. Raise or not, the franchise tag still limits a player's earning potential.

Re: Dwight Freeney free agent

Freeney was indeed franchised yesterday, according to the Associated Press, which reported "The Indianapolis Colts made defensive end Dwight Freeney their franchise player on Monday, keeping him with the Super Bowl champions for at least one more season while they work on a long-term contract... Freeney, a first-round draft pick in 2002, missed the Pro Bowl this year for the first time since his rookie season. He was held to a career-low 5 1/2 sacks while fighting shoulder and leg injuries."

Polian says Freeney wasn't going anywhere. Is he worth the kind of money they'll have to cough up to keep him?

If they can't reach a long term deal, how many times can they use the tag on him? Could they keep doing it until they feel he is no longer any use to them. I don't think they will risk that, but just my curiosity.

They built their D for speed and he is the quickest of the bunch...they better commit to him...

Interesting info on Freeney's one-year tender; it's actually gone up because he hasn't signed it. According to the Indianapolis Star, "The one-year tender, which Freeney has not signed, increased from $8.644 million to $9.239 million... Owner Jim Irsay is optimistic the team will be able to sign Freeney to a long-term contract in the coming months." They'd better. As Gotham says, he's perfect for the Colts defense.

What?...If that is true...Why would he sign earlier?...duh!...I would wait til the big number kicked in too...is it because he has the franchise tag and other salaries went up in the meantime???...sounds odd...

Well, it's the average of the top 5 highested paid players at a position... so if Joey Porter or whoever signs for a big number, then I assume the average would increase. Surprised the rules don't cause it to get locked in at the time the tender is first offered.

Yeah that is what I figured...there is no lock, cause by the same token, owners can come to their senses and sign free agents for less...not likely...good for Dwight, he waited them out.
