Super Bowl XLI - Indianapolis Colts thread

On Sunday, February 4, the Indianapolis Colts will meet the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. So, Colts fans, this is the place to discuss your team as they prepare for the big game. Can Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy finally win a Super Bowl ring? Will this be Dungy's last game? Will Addai and Rhodes be able to run on the Chicago D? What does Indy need to do to win the game?

Cool Re: Super Bowl XLI - Indianapolis Colts thread

The colts to win have to play good D. Peyton must pass the ball almost 35 times. He should rack up about 150 rushing yards and 390 passing yards if he has a good game. Mr. ADDIA needs longer runs. He should get about 200 rushing yards. But the D needs to watch for Jones running and long bombs by Grossman. But at the end it should be

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Indianapolis Colts thread

I don't see the score being that high Cadeb but I do see Peyton Manning having some success. It should be interesting to see how the Bears defense deals with an offense that should be hot.

On the other side, Rex Grossman against a Colts defense that has done well this post-season. Is the fire still lit under them? Or are they relaxing?

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Indianapolis Colts thread

All jokes a side I beleive that if lovey does'nt go in the game worryed about the media playing Him against his good friend for "Spanking him in this game" He's going To use the same Recipe that Bill "choke alot"used on the Real Greatest Show on Turf In ther first Superbowl.
There going to Hit "Cinderella Peyton" right In his Chinny Chinn Chinn and Marvin Bo Peep to .
And I won't Mind If The boy Wonder Dallas Clark get's served up while there at It.
If I was the Defensive cordinater It would be 10 lashes with a cat of nine tails If Clark Gets hit and his Helmets not broken.
I would Pay extra If Manny gets Knocked out the game and "Remember me Shaun King" has to finish.
Did'nt know he was on the team did you ?
I'm not sure he's still on the team but If so Oooooooh Boooooy
I hope he's still Is.
Better check before finishes this farie tail.

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Indianapolis Colts thread

The following is how I would go about attacking the Chicago Bears.

Offensive Gameplan
Peyton Manning is arguably the NFL’s most prolific passer and has consistently shown the ability to make accurate throws on all three levels. He is a student of the game and a master of the no-huddle offense. In order to prevent the Bears from substituting en masse, I would employ the latter strategy. It keeps the same personnel on the field and creates a sense of confusion before every play. I am confident that Manning will enjoy success through the air because the Bears run a straightforward scheme that does not mask coverage shells as well as some. I tell him to make his reads, trust his keys, take what the defense gives him, and maintain patience.

I want to establish my offense first and foremost, not just my running game. I want to come out in a short spread and take advantage of Manning’s lightning quick release to subdue the pass-rushing onslaught. I tell my star-studded receivers in Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne to run a lot of short, crisp routes early in order to establish a rhythm early.

After hitting the Bears secondary with the first air raid and spreading them out, I would look towards working it back over the middle. By now, the pressure will have dissipated slightly and one of the Tampa 2’s glaring weaknesses, the middle seam, will be exposed. I would dial in several two-tight end sets and have tight ends Dallas Clark and Ben Utecht attack it relentlessly. The benefits of doing this are threefold: (1) It gives the defense two men to worry about, rolling more pressure onto the shoulders of Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs to limit plus plays to the outside. (2) It extends me the opportunity to get creative in playcalling, as one of the two tight ends could work underneath while the other stretches the field. (3) It allows for a boost in pass protection as they can chip the defensive ends on the way upfield and make them take wider paths to the quarterback.

With the Bears safeties committed to helping linebackers deep over the middle, it puts the cornerbacks on an island with either Marvin Harrison or Reggie Wayne. Ergo, giving the aforementioned the opportunity to go vertical and make a big play that could tip the scales on the grandest stage of them all. If my two stars are matched up in man-to-man coverage, I am confident that they will be able to get open. Consequently, it also opens up my third and fourth receivers to find the soft spots in the defense.

With a passing gameplan that incorporates elements of the short spread and the vertical attack, the defense will have their hands full attempting to take away the pass. Enter Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes. The two-pronged attack compliments each other well and bring superlative versatility to a ground game. With the defense spread out, I look to open up a wide array of running plays that exploits the Bears aggressiveness. I look to employ a significant amount of cutback runs that get the Bears to overpursue. In addition, I would run several draws over the course of the game, which has the same benefits as cutbacks. Once the linebackers are unable to pursue sideline-to-sideline, I would look to add another layer to the ground attack by using gut and stretch runs.

Defensive Gameplan
While the Tampa 2 is far from perfect, it plays to my strengths, so I won’t abandon it yet. The defense was built with aggressive and athletic play in mind, so I try to make the Bears play into my strengths. My run defense is stellar by no means, but it has been there when it has counted.

Since getting my star safety Bob Sanders back, I have more options when playing to stop the run. Despite his marginal size, he plays bigger and has shown a degree of comfort when he lines up in-the-box. I can drop him down, giving me eight defenders as opposed to seven. Not only is Sanders my fastest defender, but he is also the surest tackler. I want my guys to take excellent angles of pursuit on runners and funnel all the action towards him.

While Bob Sanders is an asset in run support, I want to put in more elements that will help curb the effectiveness of the Bears vaunted running game. Because I know the Bears offensive line features bigger, more physical personnel, I will look to install well-thought out stunts that negate their imposing advantages. This strategy requires tremendous timing to work flawlessly. Run stunts mix up blocking assignments and clog desirable lanes by design. In the playoffs, my players have been executing them better than in the regular season.

Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are relentless bookends that can burn the edge with the best of them. While offensive tackles John Tait and Fred Miller have been very good this year, both have struggled with speed rushers over the course of their career. I protect them within the scheme to the best of my ability and tell them to pin their ears back in effort to disrupt Rex Grossman’s rhythm, forcing him to step up and make his throws. It is key to make him feel the pressure early and get a few licks on him to rattle his cage a bit. The Colts cannot let him be composed.

I use an over-under bracket coverage to ensure that the seam stays clean in a basic Cover One coverage shell. The seam pass is Grossman’s best throw and I will refuse to give in to it. I would assign a linebacker permanent duty on Desmond Clark in passing situations and not allow the Bears to establish it as a viable option. Safety Antoine Bethea will need to make smart reads, because he would be playing a mid-deep coverage in order to take away the seam over the top and help out with Bernard Berrian deep. It may surrender a big play, but it would shift the pressure and make Grossman beat the Colts.

Special Teams Gameplan
I absolutely do not Devin Hester to be dancing in Miami. He has gamebreaking ability that could potentially keep the Bears in the game along with their defense. Because my coverage was shaky against New England in the AFC Championship Games, I want to give him as few opportunities as I can.

I continue my practice of showing a milling about look prior to kickoff. With this particular scheme, it does not give consistent looks to blockers and gets them away from their typical routine because different players have different gap assignments each time. I also put two gunners on containment purposes solely to the outside, forcing Hester to spring one up the gut, which he can certainly do, but he is not as dangerous at it as he is to the perimeter.

In conjunction to that, I install a mortar kick strategy. It is a higher kick designed for optimal hangtime so the coverage unit has time to get down the field and not allow blockers to get set. It concedes some field position, but it severely diminishes the chance for a game-changing play that swings momentum.

If Hester wants to force the issue and tries to return after a particular high kick, attempt to stand him up after he his threat is neutralized and strip the ball away from him. He has had problem holding onto the ball before.

Punter Hunter Smith is the least used in the NFL, but his role will be important in Super Bowl XLI. I am willing to compromise some field position if it guarantees that the threat Hester poses will be effective eliminated. Punt away from him at all costs. Overall, the special teams philosophy can be summed up as bend-but-do-not-break.

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Indianapolis Colts thread

I'm going to throw a score out there. I see the Colts winning and by some sizeable margin. I'm going with the Colts to win by a score of 32-13.

Peyton, Harrison, Wayne and Addai will have some fun tonight.

At this point the 13 is out. 32 may be possible.

Indianapolis Colts Win Super Bowl XLI
Men's News Daily, CA - 43 minutes ago
The Indianapolis Colts have defeated the Chicago Bears, 29-17 to win the National Football League’s Super Bowl in Miami, Florida. As VOA’S David Byrd reports, the Colts captured the title for the first time since 1971, when the franchise was in Baltimore.

The game did not look good for Indianapolis when Devin Hester ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown. However, Indianapolis was able to score when quarterback Peyton Manning threw a touchdown to Reggie Wayne. The Colts missed the extra point.

The Bears took a 14-6 lead when quarterback Rex Grossman connected with Mushin Muhammad from four yards out. Adam Vinatieri kicked a 14-yard field goal in the second quarter to make it 14-9. Indianapolis took a 16-14 lead in the second quarter when Dominic Rhodes scored on a two-yard touchdown run.

The Colts added two more field goals while Chicago added a field goal of its own to make the score 22-17. But Chicago’s hopes were shattered when quarterback Rex Grossman threw an interception that the Colts ran back for a touchdown.

Post your comments about this story here.
Well the "Bears were who Denny Green thought they were but peyton did'nt let them off the hook".
First things first the colts had one advantage Dungy did'nt have to worry about the offense.
Dungy was Blessed with having two Cordinators 'Peyton and moore" .
What In the World was the "Chicago's Brass" thinking letting lovie be envolved with calling Offensive Play's .
Did they not see the "Ram's Super Bowl 1999" or did Lovie not put that on his resume?
The Ram defense was Horrible they only won buy 3 point's remember?
"I might be wrong about the 3 point's" but never the less the Titans were 1 yard short of beating the Rams defense.
The point I'm makeing is If lovie Could"nt come up with a decent scheme For what he's good at "Defense" how could they had thought he could have came up with a good offensive Plan.
1.) Why did he allow Grossman to stay In the Game?
2.) Whats the deal with saving Hester from doing what he does best.?
3) Who's really the Brains behind that defense.?
4.) Who'sthe Bears cordinator they never showed him all night.?
5.) What's the deal with Mahammad getting 2 maybe 3 Balls?
6.) Did Lovie Justify his deserving that "Super Bowl Coaches Contract"
I dind'nt think so what about you.?

Cool Re: Super Bowl XLI - Indianapolis Colts thread

1. He allowed Grossman to stay in the game because Griese hadn't played a down all year.

2. And I don't think that decision cost Lovie a contract. He still made it to the SuperBowl and as bad as Grossman played, they were in it to the last quarter. He'll get his bucks.

I can only hope I can feel the same way, just one year, about the Jets.

It is past midnight, and I have no intention of sleeping. I'm sitting here, drinking a beer, answering emails, texts, and phones calls congratulating me. My best friend from when we were six years old called from San Diego, screaming out loud with joy. It is all crazy. I can only imagine what downtown Indy looks and sounds like.

It's all very surreal; very pleasantly surreal. I almost can't put into words my feelings. It is as if all the tension in body were swept away. There is nothing but joy. This is the power of sports.

What was he going to do, bring in Griese, who probably had next to no snaps during the week? That would've been a bigger disaster than what Grossman did. Still not sold on Rex as "The Man" in ChiTown, though.

I have no idea, and wondered this quite audibly during the game. Hester is your returner, he wasn't hurt, and he single-handedly outperformed everyone but Thomas Jones on that offense. So where was he on some of those kicks? Excellent question that I'd love to hear Lovie's answer to.

And none of this changes the fact that Lovie Smith is still an excellent coach.

Bigger Disaster?...How?

And Hester was standing at the 30 yard line, waiting for the scrib kick...

Well, yeah, the Colts used the squib kick well, no doubt about it. But if you catch a replay, there were at least a few kicks where Hester wasn't the deep man. Maybe Lovey was pulling him trying to force a deep kick, I dunno, but I think it was a bad strategy.
