A major, leaguewide problem exists, according to team president Bill Polian. A system that requires teams to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at unproven players selected in the first round, he insisted, "is crazy.''
Polian says that in a game where people have to earn things by merit on the field, they need to pay the right people.
Polian says according to Stafford's contract, he will earn more in q]guaranteed money than Eli Manning, who played in the Super Bowl and was voted MVP. He said its crazy and no business can keep that model very long.
The concept of a rookie wage scale likely will be a priority among owners when discussions over a new labor agreement intensify.
Polian insisted teams aren't trying to save money by limiting the cost of unproven first-round draft picks. Rather, they're intent on funneling the money where it belongs, which is to established veterans.
