Hoosiers lose another close one to Wildcats

Senior Craig Moore hit two free throws with 6.6 seconds left for Northwestern as the Wildcats held off Indiana, 77-75, in what was easily the best road performance of the season for the Hoosiers. "We deserved to win, but so did they," Crean said. "They made one more play than we did."
The Hoosiers had one chance to tie or win the game in the closing seconds but the Wildcats' Kevin Coble stole the inbounds pass and ran out the clock.
"It's another learning lesson for our team to understand, you never win or lose the game on the last play, but everybody has got to do their job in situations like that," added Crean.
From the start, the Hoosiers appeared confident on the road and it showed. Indiana jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first four minutes thanks to three-triples by junior Devan Dumes, a three-pointer by freshman Verdell Jones III and a dunk by freshman Nick Williams.
Dumes would score 21 of his career-high 26 points in the first half and the teams went into intermission tied at 39-39.
The Wildcats would come out early in the second half and built a 49-42 lead with a little more than 16 minutes to go. Northwestern would extend that to 11 points on a conventional three-point play by Coble, which made it 58-47 with 11:08 to go.
Dumes would score the next five points, but Coble, who had 14 of his 19 points in the second half kept making big play after big play. His jumper with 7:13 to go gave the hosts a 68-59 lead and it looked as though the Wildcats would pull away.
However, Indiana played one of its best stretches of basketball down the stretch. Jones would hit a jumper in the corner and the Hoosiers turned a turnover into two made free throws by freshman Malik Story to make it 68-63 with 5:10 to go. After a Northwestern miss, Jones hit another runner and following a steal by Story, he would once again go to the line and cut the lead to 68-67 with 4:11 to go.
Moore would make a layup for Northwestern and Story again hit a pair of charity tosses to make it 70-69 at the 3:28 mark. Coble would hit a three-pointer and following an IU miss hit another jumper as the Wildcats led 75-69 with 2:10 to go.
Following a timeout, Jones would nail a bomb for IU to cut it to 75-72 and after Coble missed a free throw, freshman Matt Roth, who had 12 points, hit a trey from the corner to tie the score with 36 seconds to go.
Moore would lead Northwestern with 21 points. Jones had 14 for Indiana to go along with seven assists. The Hoosiers made all 11 of their free throw attempts in the second half and had a season-high 19 assists for 23 field goals.
For the seventh straight league game, Indiana outrebounded its opponent holding a 30-19 edge over the Wildcats on the glass. Freshman Tom Pritchard had 10 rebounds and also added seven points.
Led by Dumes, who made six of 10 from three-point range, the Hoosiers made a season-high 12 three-pointers. Roth had four bombs and Jones added two. Indiana's 89.5% effort from the free throw line (17 of 19) also was a season best.
Indiana will next face Ohio State on Saturday at 4 p.m. for a game that will be shown on ESPN.

Hoosiers Edged In Closing Seconds At Northwestern - Devan Dumes led Indiana with 26 points.

What a heartbreaker for the Hoosiers!
