| Five on one: Illini tradition Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall (above) was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 23 pick in the first round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. He joins some elite company in being a first-round selection from the school. Five other Illini football players taken in the first round: 1. Jeff George, QB. The No. 1 overall pick by Indianapolis in 1990 2. Kevin Hardy, LB. Jacksonville selected him at No. 2 in 1996 3. Simeon Rice, DE. Taken by the Arizona Cardinals immediately after Hardy at No. 3 in 1996 4. Dick Butkus, LB. Selected No. 3 by the Bears in 1965 5. Tony Eason, QB. New England took him at No. 15 in 1983.
