| Re: Mutombo inducted into World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame Now, he'll be recognized as one of the sports world's greatest humanitarians.
The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame will induct the Rockets center Wednesday as a tribute for his community service across the globe. Former Major League Baseball All-Star slugger Edgar Martinez and NASCAR veteran Kyle Petty are the other inductees.
The Hall of Fame, located in Boise, Idaho, has honored athletes throughout the sports world, including Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe and Roberto Clemente. Mutombo will be the seventh NBA star selected to the Hall of Fame.
Mutombo, an eight-time All-Star center, will be largely honored for his efforts to improve the healthcare of his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation has raised $15 million towards the building of the $29 million Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital and Research Center in the capital city of Kinshasa. The 300-bed facility, named after the center's mother, will be the country's first hospital in four decades when it opens this summer.
The Rockets star center has also been involved with the NBA's Basketball Without Borders Africa initiative, United for Children, the Unite against AIDS campaign and CARE. Mutombo was recognized for his community efforts during the State of the Union Address Here we go a feel good story...never new there was such a Hall of Fame... |
