Biggio to return

According to a November 10 article in the Houston Chronicle, Craig Biggio will return for a 20th season with the Houston Astros. "The Astros will hold a news conference today," the paper reported, "to announce a one-year contract agreement with the veteran second baseman worth slightly more than $5 million, according to Major League Baseball officials." Wow, I'm shocked. I thought for sure that Biggio was done. What does he have left in the tank for year #20?

How can you possibly be shocked?...The man sits at 70 hits away from 3,000...an Hall of Fame certainty in the age of steroids...of course he is coming back...

Re: Biggio to return

It might be a surprise to those outside of Houston, but I didn't really think it was ever in doubt. The Astros, unlike most sports franchises these days, are owned by a single, very rich dude. Drayton McLane is a very loyal man who also realizes that this is a special opportunity that may never come along again, and that this is a seriously good money-making opportunity.

As far as Biggio having anything left, he's probably got just enough. True, he didn't play well at all for the final third of the season, but he started off on fire, as he usually does. The past four or five years have been that way, though last year was the biggest dispairity, I believe. Even if his play at the beginning of the year is diminished from last year, he should be a pretty productive player, at least for the first part of the year. Seventy hits will come and go pretty quickly.

It may be out of the question, but he has an outside shot at becoming only the 11th member of the 3000, 300 club. 19 homers this year will get him there. Puts him in some seriously good company, except Rafael Palmeiro, of course. It may not be possible, as he may not be playing well enough to start the last part of the season, which is when he tends to pick up the power game, but it would be another huge milestone. I'll be rooting the whole time. Unfortunately, I no longer live in Houston, so I won't be able to be there, I guess.
