Is there any hope for NHL refs???

Man, these guys are incompetent.

Take tonight's goal that just tied the Flyers/Canadians game.

Clearly hit with the Blade of the stick above the crossbar.

He hit the puck with an up to downward motion, and after touching the puck, his blade touches the crossbar.

Given that description, how could he have not touched the puck, with his blade, above the crossbar, thereby making the goal void.

And they even looked at the replay.

Truly incompetent. 100%

Re: Is there any hope for NHL refs???

Wow, and yet another totally ridiculous call, with a clear shoulder hit by Richards called a kneeing penalty.

Hey hometown refs, how about you just toss the puck in the nets for the Habs and we can all call it a night.

wow...

I really feel the refs have made every effort to give this game to the Canadians.

Even the Montreal fans should be embarassed by how bad the calls have been in this game.

Re: Is there any hope for NHL refs???

There was a penalty called against the Red Wings' goaltender (Hasek) in one of the first two games against Nashville for delay of the game (the referee apparently thought he was flopping). The video replay clearly showed he was tripped. Never ask these officials to make a call that involves their thinking.

Re: Is there any hope for NHL refs???

I have no emotional vested interest in either Philly or Montreal so I think I can weigh in as an impartial observer.

You're not going to like this Phils.

I watched the game, I re-watched highlights.
Kovalev's goal was legit. One of the angles clearly shows the portion of his stick that made contact with the puck was below the crossbar when it did it (the angle is facing the front of the Flyers net). Also, in my opinion, that puck was going in anyway, with or without help from Kovalev. The refs made the right call there.

And Richards tripped him. When it happened I first thought that Kovalev was embellishing, or had purposefully moved into Richards to draw the call, but the replay from another angle showed clearly that Kovalev did not veer from his path in any way and Richards very clearly stuck his leg out into Kovalev's path to trip him. Again, the refs made the right call.

I'm not saying they're perfect (they blew an obvious goaltender interference against Washington). But I do think in those two instances in Philly-Habs game 1, they made the right call.

Here's hoping the rest of the series has less controversy.

And I'd say you are wrong. About the goal, yeah, two days later I guess I have to believe the mystery video they don't see fit to show us.

The kneeing call was garbage, Richards hit him with a shoulder. Anyone can see that. They even had Brian Engblom and Kieth Jones on TV saying the Refs blew it.

We just have to disagree on that one.

There's a replay (or was anyway) on nhl.com that seems pretty clear to me. It's in a highlight reel of the whole game. Although watching streaming flash is never as clear as televised video.

And yes, I guess we'll just have to disagree on the Richards call.

I do think this is going to be a long, hard-fought series. I think the Flyers are probably furious about that game and will come back with all guns firing. Should be some good hockey!

Re: Is there any hope for NHL refs???

that is the rule - it is a goal if the portion of the stick that made contact with the puck was below the crossbar when it struck the puck. That's where all the time went into examining it.
