| NHL amends unsportsmanlike conduct rule in response to Avery's antics Here Ya Go Folks! NEW YORK -- Sean Avery found yet another way to annoy Martin Brodeur -- and forced the NHL to change a rule in his honor. The Hall of Fame resume of the New Jersey Devils goalie doesn't resonate with Avery, the New York Rangers forward who has turned agitation into an art form. During a five-on-three power play in New Jersey's 4-3 overtime playoff victory Sunday night, Avery planted himself in the crease and faceguarded Brodeur. Holding his stick upward, Avery waved it side to side to block Brodeur's vision in a newfangled method of screening. Brodeur gave him a whack, but that was hardly a deterrent. "I've played for 15 years in this league. I've been watching games for 33 years. I had never seen that in my life," Brodeur said. "I don't think that kind of behavior should be done in front of the net, but there is no rule for it." That was true Sunday, but not Monday. The NHL moved quickly to eliminate this activity by making an on-the-fly rule interpretation. "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play," Colin Campbell, the NHL director of hockey operations, said in a statement. | Re: NHL amends unsportsmanlike conduct rule in response to Avery's antics Me so pleased. Brodeur didn't react because he's classy, that's why. Not that Cherry is the go to guy for how you want to make decisions but even Cherry - who loves the fighting, the in-your-face, the stirring of the pot - said last night, Avery is a jerk and he always was a jerk and what he did was inexcusable. There were some mikes on the Preds guys on the game on the weekend and you could hear them, after getting a goal on hasek, while they are hugging and celebrating, saying over the net - hasek nice five hole! while hasek stood drinking water trying to ignore them. so taunting to some extent is the game, in every sport. That cracked me up. but this - I'm glad to see it's taken care of.

| Re: NHL amends unsportsmanlike conduct rule in response to Avery's antics okay personal life aside - there are certain things that are done by goalies in the NHL and brodeur, in my eyes, does not cross that line into 'too much'. In the face of this, he could have been angry, he could have spouted four letter words, and yeah he could have smacked Avery right in the face - but he chose not to. I think the way brodeur handled this situation specifically, which is what i meant, was perfect. |

Don't like it...You can't have a rule change in mid playoff...wait for the off-season...Avery is an idiot, but the rule had a loop hole...so they should live with it through the playoffs. |
