Roy says he said nothing, but he appears to be urging his son to cross the ice to confront the other goalie, who is unsuspecting and gets the crap beaten out of him by Jonathon Roy - this is hideous. then Roy tries to skate off - but gets in another brawl - while giving the crowd the double finger.

That was pathetic. I don't understand french, but he seems to be saying he was just calling his son over to the bench, and the reporter is showing over and over that he is clearly calling him down to the other end to fight.

I don't mind fighting in hockey, but clearly this was just a case of beating up a disinterested opennet. Pathetic, and he should be suspended. As should Patrick Roy.

the Quebec government wants to make it hurt if you fight in the Quebec major junior fighting league - Quebec's minister responsible for sport Michelle Courchesne is looking into making very tough sanctions against kids who fight.
she's asked the asked QMJHL president Gilles Courteau and others to submit a report containing anti-fighting proposals by June.

Courteau said it is nearly impossible to eliminate fighting from the sport, but harsher sanctions might dissuade players from dropping the gloves. He said the committee will include players, coaches, parents, hockey experts, members of the business community and others.

I think the bigger issue is just someone doing what Roy seems to have done. Ordering hs young players to fight. And even worse, the cowardly way in which his son did it.

I don't think the suspensions were long enough. They should be out for whatever remains of the season. And for the playoffs. And have to go before some type of board to be reinstated. And pay a fine.

And anything else they can think of. I don't want the government, any government, involved.

Does your government actually have a minister for sport, or is that a title within the league??

It's bad enough that the US government is wasting all thier time on baseball players, when they should just be arresting them. I am a bit surprised if your statement means what it seems to!

No it's real - she is the minister for sport in Quebec.
That situation doesn't frighten me so much. I am glad they are looking into this - this kind of behaviour, this fighting is - as daffy Duck says - despicable.
Roy was fined $5000.

True enough. I guess it is all what you are used to, as far as government involvement. Like I said, I just think governments need to be things that are more important. The goverment here can't manage the things they are supposed to be doing, much less sticking thier noses in sports!

I'm just glad you see where I as going with it! I didn't really want to get into political talk! But just look at the circus here with baseball. What a mess.

If I was using or peddling drugs, or just under suspicion, they would just come and arrest me. These athletes get to walk in with $3,000 suits and sign some autographs for the starstruck folks in DC, then jet back home.

Hopefully it happens as you say, and the gov just sort of breaks the ice, and lets the league handle it!

yeah it's a big mess. The Roys are at the forefront, because of this incident but it's fighting in the league in general that is just out of control.
Roy's double-finger to the crowd, though, encapsulates the attitude - he's the back-up goalie too - am i wrong in assuming that a backup should be more humble?

He apologized for the gesture, but not for beating the crap out of the other keeper...

and no...I don't want a humble goalie on my team...I want a cocky one that thinks he can stop a freight train with his glove or stick.

I don't know if he should be humble, but he should be smart. That move has been done by quite a few pro athletes, and seems to me is always leads to some games off, and having a lighter wallet!
