owners spending like crazy - again

the Lightning sold for $200 million, and there is a feeling that owners are going back to where they were before.
The sales of the last 13 franchises together with the huge amounts thrown at signing free agents, make some think that hockey is headed back to where it was pre lockout.
There is no "significant US TV deal", it reads in the Star today, and no way to increase revenue but raise ticket prices.
In 2001, the Habs were worth $185 mill. So, imagine what The Habs are worth now if a team from the southern USA (nashville, tampa bay) is worth $200 mill?
Plus no shortage of bidders on these teams (the sale of nashville showed that).
The average price pre-lockout of the last seven team sales was $124.1 mill.
the average price post-lockout of the last six? $165.5 mill.

Lightning strikes wallets

A group of investors led by Doug MacLean and partner Jeff Sherrin will pay slightly more than US$206 million for the Tampa Bay Lightning, ensuring a profit for owner William Davidson.
The price tag, reported Thursday by The Globe and Mail, includes lease rights at the St. Pete Times Forum, where the team plays, as well as 5.5 acres of adjacent real estate in downtown Tampa.
Davidson is reputed to have lost about $70 million on the club since acquiring it in 1999 for about $115 million, including debt.
MacLean, former president of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Sherrin, a Florida developer, have already set up shop in a conference room not far from the Lightning offices as they prepare for what they hope will be a smooth handover once the league approves the transaction.

This is probable more like what an NHL team is worth. Its funny how they won the cup are they still lost 70 million over the 8 yrs.

I think they are going to kill the league...but along with ticket prices, I bet the sells of team jersey's etc make for a pretty penny as well.
