ever seen 'The Rocket'?

I watched it last night - it was a movie made back in 2005 based on Rocket Richard.
It's French Canadian - as it should be, this movie had to be made by French Canadians - with subtitles starring Roy Dupuis, a very well known Quebecois actor.
It was a gorgeous movie, and touching and very well acted, well written, not embarrassing or hokey. Richard is shown as a man of few words.
The odd thing was, we saw it from his point of view and how the first part is how he and his wife got together - so we get to know his wife's family. But we never meet the Richards. We never see where he came from, who his parents were - which is awkward as he happened to have a fairly decent brother who is also in the hall of fame.
This is how to make a movie about Maurice but ignore Henri.
Must have been legal matters. Anyway, if you can, watch it, because he is still arguably the best hockey player who ever lived, and he was far far from perfect -he had a lot of hurdles to jump. It's called 'Maurice Richard' and the English title is 'The Rocket'.
I love a great hockey movie.

The Rocket is no comedy - but it is an interesting study of what he had to go through to get respect.

Re: ever seen 'The Rocket'?

Wow very quickly dismissive of you, Gotham.
part of what makes him great is in what he achieved. he was beaten black and blue most games and refs never called it. Do you know they banned French from the bench? And he could barely speak english.
but he was a great one. They say he won the scoring champ each year but the English guys in charge worked it out by padding the english speaking players stats.
I would always put Maurice up in the to 5 best players ever. It's easy to forget the guys from way back when. It's impossible to compare a player from the 50s o now - the game is so different.
By the way, Lecavalier was in it, he played Beliveau, Ricci was a Hab and Avery was Dill the goon on the Rangers.
It wouldn't have hit your theatres because it's a Canadian movie and wouldn't have been wanting to compete with the Hollywood crappy blockbusters.

I am on the road, I have to be quick...

Adversity aside...there are a players I would take over him...Orr aside...Someone like Bobby Hull could skate faster and shoot harder etc...and I am not a Habs fan...so take that into account.

Re: ever seen 'The Rocket'?

Okay, I won't keep you-
the english vs french thing is something we've had as a constant cultural divider up here. If you aren't canadian, it might not seem so strong, what richard did - he gave the French canadians something to make them feel special. he broke down barriers. and he was fricking tough.
I'd take him over Hull any day.
You don't like the habs? hm. i never knew.
