Free agents up for grabs

They are noted in their selected team threads, but it is pretty massive to look at the list all at once:
Drury.
rafalski.
Gomez.
briere.
Blake (jason).
Smyth.
Nylander.
Souray.
Kozlov.
Kuriya.
Now if the leafs did something drastic, like sent a major down to the minors, it turns out we could loosen up enough $$ to pay for 2 of these guys.
Not sure we'll do that.
Given the choice? i'd take Smyth.
I love souray but defensively we are reasonably solid - it's our offense in TO that we have to take care of.
who'd you like to see most on your team? who can you afford?

Tommorows gonna be great! i cant wait to see who goes where....the leafs definitly need to get in the mix and pick up one of the big names, I think they should make a go at Drury or Smyth

Re: Free agents up for grabs

interesting - but I doubt the Flyers thing - briere's going to a cup contender. that's the whole point of leaving the sabres- move on up.

Cool Re: Free agents up for grabs

From today's Newsday by Greg Logan - Islanders beat writer. Who he thinks will be the future overpaid team.

Quote:
The NHL free agent market opens at noon today. Here are the top five candidates for the future all-overpaid team:

1. DANIEL BRIERE, C,

Buffalo

Turned down five-year offer for $25 million because a No. 1 center is the most precious commodity in this market.

2. CHRIS DRURY, C

Buffalo

Could the President's Trophy winners lose the top two centers on the market and their heart and soul? Very possible.

3. RYAN SMYTH, LW,

Islanders

He wants to test the market, but Isles might still pay top dollar for coach Ted Nolan's ideal leader.

4. SCOTT GOMEZ, C,

Devils

In seven seasons, he's scored more than 19 goals once in Devils' system but might get $5-$6 million per for his playmaking.

5. SHELDON SOURAY, D

Montreal

Someone will pay big bucks for 26-goal scorer, but his minus-28 rating will raise a red flag for others.

Others to watch: Paul Kariya, LW, Nashville; Brian Rafalski, D, Devils; Jason Blake, RW, Islanders; Mathieu Schneider, D, Detroit; Scott Hannan, D, San Jose; Michael Nylander, C, Rangers; Bill Guerin, RW, San Jose; Dainius Zubrus, RW, Buffalo; Brad Stuart, D, Calgary; Roman Hamrlik, D, Calgary.

Re: Free agents up for grabs

with all the aquisitions the flyers have made this off-season, and now with Briere, its not unreasonable to say that the Flyers will be contenders next season....

also Mathieu Schnieder has signed with the Ducks..2 year 11 mill

I heard it's a 7 year deal for Gomez.
Poti is a capital, too.

Cool Re: Free agents up for grabs

I was shocked at how fast people were signed. I really figured it would take days.

Assuming there was no tampering, how could these signings happen in 5 seconds.

What was there, an auction? Jason Blake, going once, going twice, sold!

Re: Free agents up for grabs

so who is left?
Guerin is a name still being batted around, here in Toronto and elsewhere. Now Guerin would be in line with our usual buys - past his prime and no one else took him.
Forsberg is unsigned. So too Lindros (been down that road).
Most surprising?
Shanahan is still unsigned.
Hmm.
would he look good in blue and white? he'd look good in any colour. Toronto can't afford him. will the rangers re-sign?
they'd be nuts not to, but guess what? i think management in NY is nuts.

Re: Free agents up for grabs

Shanahan will most likely resign with New York, he has stated that he is very happy there and with the organization....however, dont get me wrong, i would LOVE to see Shanahan on the leafs, as he is my favourite player....
