| the Shane Doan controversy Toronto Star reports that "Hockey Canada officials (Bob Nicholson, president of Hockey Canada, and other executive members) will appear before a parliamentary committee today to explain why (Doan) was named captain of Canada's team at the World Hockey Championships in Moscow."
The NHL says this is embarrassing, and it is.
Back in 2005, it is alleged by officials that Doan said, after another non call by a ref, to goalie and fellow Coyote Cujo that there were four officials on the ice and they were all French Canadian and they were in Montreal so figure it out.
Accusations of bias. Imagine that, in a ref. The world is crumbling down.
There is a party up here called the Bloc Quebecois and they are responsible for calling this up, but all parties in the House of Commons backed the Bloc and now it is up to Hockey Canada to explain Doan's captaincy.
I've read that Doan did say it, and I've read that Doan didn't say it, so i'm not sure - but he was cleared by the NHL.
It's a touchy subject and there is always tension in English/French relations in canada. but I thought maybe hockey was our national game.
Here's hoping Doan remains as captain, but seems doubtful - even ken Dryden, who is now a politician, thinks Hockey Canada stepped out of bounds on this one. |
