the Shane Doan controversy

Toronto Star reports that "Hockey Canada officials (Bob Nicholson, president of Hockey Canada, and other executive members) will appear before a parliamentary committee today to explain why (Doan) was named captain of Canada's team at the World Hockey Championships in Moscow."
The NHL says this is embarrassing, and it is.
Back in 2005, it is alleged by officials that Doan said, after another non call by a ref, to goalie and fellow Coyote Cujo that there were four officials on the ice and they were all French Canadian and they were in Montreal so figure it out.
Accusations of bias. Imagine that, in a ref. The world is crumbling down.
There is a party up here called the Bloc Quebecois and they are responsible for calling this up, but all parties in the House of Commons backed the Bloc and now it is up to Hockey Canada to explain Doan's captaincy.
I've read that Doan did say it, and I've read that Doan didn't say it, so i'm not sure - but he was cleared by the NHL.
It's a touchy subject and there is always tension in English/French relations in canada. but I thought maybe hockey was our national game.
Here's hoping Doan remains as captain, but seems doubtful - even ken Dryden, who is now a politician, thinks Hockey Canada stepped out of bounds on this one.

Thumbs down Re: the Shane Doan controversy

Oh good lord. This is such a non-story, and 99% of people are extremely ashamed of our politicians, and that is before even getting political. Getting political then, we in the west are so tired of every little so-called violation of the oversensitive language issue. Quebecer's have a choice - start becoming a real partner in Canada (including tolerance of the English culture) ... or give up their golden goose and just leave, once and for all.

Re: the Shane Doan controversy

I tried to watch what i said in the first thread very carefully, because we as a nation have a long history of oversensitive French Canadians. As English Canadians, we have to develop a thick skin when it comes to slurs of the same kind directed our way, but there is little tolerance by the French for anything seen as derogatory toward them.
It's hockey - it's heated - let it fly and then get over it. The official said he heard all that was said in passing - how slow did he have to skate to get all that?
This was a completely silly issue that wasted our $$ and the politician's time - as someone wrote to the paper, couldn't they be spending as much time trying to figure out why we are getting gouged at the gas station as they are on the Shane Doan thing?
Apparently, Doan said he said nothing at first and now has come clean that he did make these comments to Cujo. He should have just come clean, apologized, and maybe this wouldn't be happening - or maybe it would. The French Canadians have a long history of je me souviens.
I hope it's over now. Go Team Canada!
