It's that time of year...

I remember 5 or 6 years ago... coming back to my apt. from the library... after a all nighter in college... I had gotten home probably about midnight and was planning to stay up a few more hours, or as long as I could.

Before I went back to my laboring over some rediculous text book, filling my head with info. as useless as a knife in a gun fight, I was going to have a cup of coffee and watch a little sports center.

Flipped on ESPN, and there it was... the greatest sporting event of all time... Oh yes... I'm talkin' bout' playoff overtime hockey.

The Flyers and the Penguins were just begining thier first overtime... Little did I know what I was about to witness over the course of the next three hours...

I said to myself "Hey, this is cool, I'll just watch the end of this hockey game and then go back to studying." I never played hockey, and therefore I never watched hockey, and as a result I didn't know what I was missing out on.

The two hated rivals played period after period, until they had been on the ice long enough to play more than two full games of hockey.

Falling down from exhaustion... you could tell that with each minute that passed the game became that more important to win. After the finish of the Second OT period, cameras inside the locker room saw the players trying to dry off their skates w/ blow dryers b/c the sweat from their feet had warrped the leather and their feet were begining to rot.

The Flyers eventually won, I beleive in the begining of the Fourth or Fifth OT. I really can't remember. I think the Flyers ended up winning the series but don't remember who won the cup. No.... All I remember is that game... What a game.

I've been a hockey junky ever since. Only problem is, It gets hard for me to get into the reg. season games. Or at least it used to be... Until I decided to go see it live... It is the best spectator sport...

I lived in Akron OH for the past 3 years, and would regularly go see the Blue Jackets. However, last year w/ the lockout I was unable to...

I know live in Florida... I'm going to see the the Lightning play on the 7th April.

Oh Playoff Hockey is here to be soon..

Re: It's that time of year...

I grew up with hockey - saturday night in canada is Hockey night in canada. hated it when i was a teen and got back into it about 8 years ago during playoffs, the sabres and the Leafs. leafs lost and i followed the sabres until they lost too.
There's nothing like playoff games. During regualr season, if I didn't have a deep love and affection for my team, i couldn't just tune in and watch any game - I need the commitment. the fanaticism that comes that. Puts it all on the line.
Teams play better in the playoffs, no question.
Tampa bay's a great place to be right now for that, the race for the post season (i go see Ottawa play the leafs on the 15th).

Re: It's that time of year...

Who Dey - I, too, will never forget that night.

It was May 4, 2000. I was a senior in college in Boston. I had turned 21 two days earlier, and my friends and I were at a bar where our friend's band was playing when the game started. I sat at the bar watching the game on ESPN. With the game tied at one at the end of regulation, my friends convinced me that we could make it to another bar before OT began. So we booked it, and sure enough, I was able to secure a stool at the next bar just in time for overtime. An hour or two later, it was still tied at one, and I was too nervous to drink. At the end of the second overtime, we took off for the last bar of the night - the one right across the street from our dorm. Eventually, the bars closed, forcing us to run across the street and back up to my room. By the end of the fourth overtime, I was a nervous wreck. I had taken to pacing in front of the tv, too nervous to sit still. Before the fifth overtime started, I removed from the fridge the remaining birthday cake my parents had sent - a white cake with an orange and black Flyers logo made of icing. And then, it happened. With mouths full of cake, we celebrated as Keith Primeau scored halfway through the 5th OT to give the Flyers a 2-1 win. The Flyers eventually went on to win the series, but no game is as memorable as that one.

I saw my first hockey game in 1993 when I was in high school. It was a Penguins/Oilers game played on neutral ice in Cleveland. I was hooked after that. I can feel the intensity building up now as the playoffs loom. There is nothing like them.
