Re: NHL not to blame for violence

Rip Chris Simon.
But don't rip hockey.
When Simon nailed Ryan Hollweg in the face with a two-handed swing of his stick Thursday on Long Island, he made a serious mistake.
He isn't the first or last athlete to pay the piper because he lost it in the boiling vortex of competition. But because Simon is an NHL player, hockey itself will be blamed for the incident as well.
That is reality. It is not right or fair. But just look at how swiftly the indictments on hockey have been pouring in since Simon's swing and how many have come from those who usually have to be held hostage to talk pucks.
Unfortunately, Simon has given them the green light to pile on the NHL and confirm their prejudices against hockey.
But the fact of the matter is the same stuff happens in other sports without the games themselves being maligned as fundamentally flawed.
Baseball? How about Juan Marichal bopping John Roseboro in the head with a bat? Or Roger Clemens tossing a broken bat toward Mike Piazza in the World Series? Well, those are just intense competitors caught up the heat of the moment. Baseball is a great game.
The NFL? Just this past season we saw Albert Haynesworth of the Tennessee Titans stomp the helmet off the head of Dallas guard Andre Gurode and continue kicking. Then weeks later, Tyler Brayton of the Raiders kneed Seattle tight end Jerramy Stevens in the groin. Hey, the action down in the trenches really gets fierce and furious. Football is a terrific game.
The NBA? We assume everyone is familiar with the brawls involving Carmelo Anthony at Madison Square Garden and Ron Artest at the Palace of Auburn Hills. But we know, we know: NBA action is fantastic! We love this game!
The NHL? Chris Simon hacked Ryan Hollweg. Dale Hunter cheap-shotted Pierre Turgeon. Todd Bertuzzi mugged Steve Moore. Well, hockey is a brutal, vicious sport filled with thugs. Game off.
Just remember when athletes in other sports do something stupid, they're just idiots. When it happens in the NHL, the player is an idiot and the sport is a joke. Again, that's not fair. But very real.
The NHL needs to smack Simon with a monster of a suspension, because that is what he deserves.
But suspensions have zero impact when a player snaps or comes close (i.e. Ed Belfour: "You haven't seen snapping!"), because terrible decisions keep getting made, regardless of the sport.

Victor Chi is a writer for the San Jose Mercury News.

Well...unlike other sports, fighting is a part of the NHL game...so is it easier to lose it in the NHL?

Violence in all sports seems to be escalating. This is the third major attack hockey has seen in 7 years not including the brutal hit on Kaberle the othert night. That and Kobe throwing elbows, and that guy who stomped on the other guys face in football.

And this differs from the past how?...Kermit Washington and Rudy T in 1978...Dave Forbes and Henry Boucha in 1975, Tiger Williams and Owchar in 1977...etc...the list is endless...it isn't new...sports by its nature breeds an a certain amount of it.

they should have hug sessions, if someone gets mad during the game, they call a timeout and hug it out...

Now THAT'S outside-the-box thinking. I like it. And I'd pay big money to see it, but only if it's two big ol' ugly goons.

Now is that the way to go in sports that are by the most part homophobic?...too funny...Player is charge with a 5 minute penalty and a period of hand holding on across the boards...

Re: NHL not to blame for violence

The NHL has less impact in the USA than the independent vote come election time. Let's face it gents. The NHL was in terminal condition long before Chris Simon swung his stick.
