new and improved hockey season

Statistics show (in our own Toronto Star):
goals per game are up more than 20%;
there were no 50-goal scorers in the 2003/04 season - there will possibly be at least 6 this time around (name them, why doncha, members of goteamsgo);
15 teams have averaged 3 goals per game - in 03/04, only 2 teams achieved that;
in 03/04, 12 teams had a goals against average under 2.35 - this year? no teams;
power plays are up - 12 per game - in 03/04? average of 8.6;
and shootouts are a success - 112 times out of total 960 games and shooters are scoring at a rate of about 34% (leafs much lower than that).
---
Apparently, the most contentious rule is the one that penalizes the defenseman for trying to clear the puck and shooting it over the glass in his own zone instead -chance that that could decide a playoff game would be a massive drag.
better hockey game today? you decide.

Re: new and improved hockey season

I'd have to say I prefer this year to last year. There's still room for improvement. I think they're too hyper-sensative about hooking calls- but it's a vast improvement on the old "water-skiing" days. I hated that clutch and grab, clog up the neutral zone and bore them to death style of hockey.

And I'd be in favour of dropping the no-play zone for goalies and instituting what I call a "Fair Game" rule. Meaning if the goalie wants to leave his crease to play the puck then it's okay to paste him to the boards.

See now...a few rules change and Belfour would be back to being a "god"... that's all I'm saying...

Yeah, if I could change one rule, I'd definitely agree with you on that one. The corners are a total bust.

Re: new and improved hockey season

I've always dreamed of a hockey league that allows goalie's to be hit, if they leave their sacred post. Taking out hasek once in a while, or Brodeur would have been sweet - and like I've said, belfour would kill them (cujo would have a piece of them, too).
