Woo-hoo, Canada makes it past the Italians 7-2. Actually nice to see a game that isn't separated by ten goals, like the women's games. Also nice to see good goal tending (Brodeur didn't have much to do, though). Now the Olympics begins...

US and Latvia tied at 3. Given their long flight and recent travel, the fact that the US team lost their legs for a bit in the second period is somewhat acceptable. But still, a tie with Latvia is a bit worrisome. They played well, winning the overwhelming majority of the faceoffs and outshooting Latvia, but they seemed to have a problem finishing. In the parts of the 2nd and 3rd that I saw, they seemed to be waiting for the perfect opportunity instead of throwing the puck in front of the net. And yes, as mentioned before, goaltending is very much going to be an issue, judging from this game. I'm thinking the US might be lucky to medal.

I tuned into the USA/Latvia game midway through the second and it seemed the American team just fell apart at the seams. The Latvians looked like they had rockets attached to their skates for a good 5 minute period when they tied the game and eventually took the lead. Looks like the US goalie situation is as bad as expected.
