The Packers have fired defensive coordinator Bob Sanders. Sanders was defensive coordinator under McCarthy for 3 years.
Two logical outside candidates to replace Sanders are former San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan, who had McCarthy as his offensive coordinator in 2005, and ex-Rams interim coach Jim Haslett, who had McCarthy as his offensive coordinator in New Orleans from 2000 through '04.
Other qualified candidates available are ex-Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel, ex-New York Jets coach Eric Mangini and former Jacksonville Jaguars coordinator Gregg Williams. Crennel and Mangini run a 3-4 defense, however, and that wouldn't seem to be a good fit for the Packers' personnel on the defensive line and at linebacker.
That said, McCarthy said during his postseason news conference Wednesday he isn't committed to the current defensive scheme, regardless of who's coordinating it.
