Packers President Begs Brett Favre Not to Report

Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy is in Mississippi this morning in a last-ditch effort to convince Brett Favre not to report to training camp.

"They're asking him not to come up there," a source told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "They don't want him up there."

FlightAware.com lists a private jet as having left the Green Bay airport at 9:33 last night and arrived at the Hattiesburg, Mississippi airport at 11:34.

Favre faxed a letter to the league office yesterday, seeking reinstatement. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will grant his reinstatement today or tomorrow, and then the Packers have to either cut Favre, trade Favre or allow Favre on their active roster -- unless they can convince him to say home, which they're desperately trying to do.

What a mess. Why beg instead of simply cutting him?

I think beg is probably a strong word. I think they asked him to stay out so they could try to work something out. The reason they dont cut him is so he doesnt go to the Vikings or Bears. To me more and more it looks like he wants to go to the Vikings. If you had told me that in March, I would have said no way. This guy is a Packer for life. That scenario I had in my mind of him coming out of the tunnel on MNF dressed in purple on the night they were supposed to retire his number isnt so far fetched anymore. I have read they have temporarily put retiring his number that night on hold.

What else can Ted Thompson do really, he can't let him come to camp, he can't have him on sideline holding a clipboard looking over Aaron Rodgers shoulders, they can't just release, and they can't get a first round pick for him like they want. Ted Thompson drove himself into a corner here.

Re: Packers President Begs Brett Favre Not to Report

Why doesn't greenbay let him come into camp and try out for the job. If he has a better camp then rodgers then he can start. If he doesn't then he can hold the clip board....What's the big deal here?
I mean other then the 12 million they will have too pay him.

Also why does Brett want too go to Minn. so bad? There are other teams looking for his service. What's so special about Minn.?

Because they have already committed to Rodgers time and time again. To simply have that liar Favre come into camp and hold the job up in the air wouldn't be far to Rodgers. They drafted him, they planned out Farvey's retirement scenario even though it was a bogus retirement and the Packers have to stay the course or they can look forward to this same thing happening next year when the Drama Queen Brett "retires." You let Favre come to camp he'll be like one of those roaches who checks in and doesn't check out. I thought Goodell wanted an end to this nonsense. The more sports radio I hear the more people just want Brett Favre and his antics to just go away. It's played out really. This is far worse than the Roger Clemens hearings a few months back.

1. Apparently, ESPN reported this morning that they were set to let him come back and start a few months ago. It was all but a done deal. Then Favre changed his mind and decided to stay retired. I guess with them, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. After that, they decided Rodgers was their QB and they were done playing games with Brett Favre.

2. The only things I think are special about Minnesota are that, for one thing, one of his former coaches is on the staff, and for another, they have an awesome running game and are definitely legit playoff contenders, unlike, say, the New York Jets.

I would go so far as to say if the Viking had Brett Favre as quarterback, a trip to the Superbowl is a lock. What I don't understand is, if this is all about Brett wanting one more ring before he retires, why didn't he stay with the Packers, they came pretty close last year?

I saw on ESPNnews that the Packers offered him $20 million to stay retired. That sounds to me like they are afraid of him coming to camp.

Re: Packers President Begs Brett Favre Not to Report

They'll release him, trade him, put a bounty on his head, etc. before they let him come to training camp that's for sure. If he reports to camp and stands there looking over Aaron Rodgers' shoulder with a smirk on his face the Packer 2008 campaign will be Helter Skelter.
