| Packers Beefing Up Security Green Bay Packers fans and players will be protected by an extra security feature this season -- a barrier surrounding Lambeau Field, 100 feet from the stadium walls. The goal of this security project is to protect people inside Lambeau Field from vehicles that might come crashing into the stadium. "The goal of the NFL is just to keep vehicles from gaining access right up against the stadium, so this would create a barrier to keep any vehicle from getting close to the stadium," Ted Eisenrich, Packers director of facilities operations, said. The change will eliminate a few hundred parking spaces. That's an issue the Packers say they're still working on. Handicapped parking spaces won't be affected, the Packers said. The barriers include large planters with the Packers "G" logo. There will be a dozen 12-foot-high monuments engraved with images from Packers history, and two seven-foot-long concrete benches adjacent to each monument. The Packers say the measure is required this season by the NFL. "It's going to match the stadium," Packers Chairman of the Board Bob Harlan said in announcing the measures Tuesday afternoon. "The bottom line is that the league wants us to do it." Many of the barricades will be anchored to the ground but some will be portable -- though the lightest piece weighs 7,500 pounds. The barricades are being manufactured by Wausau Tile, which has done work for the Metrodome and Mall of America in Minnesota, Soldier Field in Chicago, The Coliseum in Tennessee, Times Square in New York, and the U.S. Coast Guard facility in Green Bay. Installation will begin next month, and the barriers will be in place in time for the Packers' first pre-season game in August. The project will cost about a million dollars, all coming from the stadium district's capital improvement fund. Fans at Lambeau Field think the new security measure is a good idea. "Unfortunately it's something that's probably needed to make sure somebody doesn't come driving in here with a car bomb or something like that," Bill Rector said. "They've already done that at the Cardinals stadium in Arizona, in Phoenix, and I really like it, I really do. It's a much safer feeling. You don't have as many people milling around," Rich Miers, who was visiting from Arizona, said.
