| Favre to return for 17th season GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Favre will return for his 17th NFL season, undeterred by his injuries and hoping to lead the Green Bay Packers back to the playoffs. "I am so excited about coming back," the 37-year-old quarterback said Friday on the Web site of the Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss. "We have a good nucleus of young players. We were 8-8 last year, and that's encouraging." Packers general manager Ted Thompson confirmed Favre had told the team he plans to return. "He didn't tell me exactly why he wanted to come back, except in our conversations prior to the end of the season," he said. "He was having a good time, he liked the team." | Re: Favre to return for 17th season If he wants to come back, and the team wants him back, more power to them. Still, part of me can't help but wonder if he's ultimately doing more harm than good to the Packers franchise. When he finally does hang them up, will Rodgers be ready? How many other holes will they have to fill when the time comes?

Re: Favre to return for 17th season Another season to tap off a slightly overrated career. More power to him if he captures Marino's all-time record, because he was an ironman in an era of prima donnas.

Re: Favre to return for 17th season That Aaron Rodgers pick was atrocious, especially with Dan Cody on the board. If he has successful career, I would be beyond amazed.

Re: Favre to return for 17th season If anyone puts Favre in the top five all-time, I want to know where they get their gonja. The media hype machine behind him is unbelievable. He is the prototypical gunslinger, mistakes and all. Top ten? Yes. Top five? Nope, not a chance.

Re: Favre to return for 17th season Even the brevity of his dominance in the 1990's was overrated. He had consistently awful playoff performances and has always gotten a pass from the media on it. He wasn't the reason the Packers won Super Bowl XXXI. The Patriots blew two huge coverages on offense that Favre capitalized on, which you cannot fault him for doing. But, outside of that, his game was rather pedestrian. Desmond Howard consistently gave that offense short fields and the defense turned up the heat as the game progressed. On the other hand, he was one of two culprits why they lost Super Bowl XXXII. The Broncos were getting abused by Dorsey Levens something fierce. He had ridiculous success on that defense early and Favre and Holmgren decided to go away from it. The Broncos controlled the ball for the second half and Favre didn't help with his consistent three-and-outs. The infamous game in which he committed six turnovers against the Rams is just another example. His poor decision making took the Packers out of the game before they were in it to begin with. He also holds one of the single worst throws I have seen in NFL History. In the 2003 NFL Playoffs, he made a terrible decision in overtime against the Eagles and followed it up with an even worse throw. It was a throw that did not need to be made and one that my grandmother could have picked off. Quite frankly, I don't know if I would rate him in the top ten. If I did, it would be on the cusp, probably. As some have him as the greatest of all-time and most have him borderline top five, I would consider that overrated, because any ill-spoken sentiment toward Brett Favre is considered sacrilegious. He was great, but I never got the feeling that he transcended the ages, which will ultimately be his place in history.
