Depleted linebackers hanging on

Call them the fortunate five.
The five scholarship linebackers Georgia has left that aren't lost to season-ending injuries.
The number includes freshman Nick Williams, who was moved to linebacker from safety more than a month ago to help with dwindling numbers.
"We need guys just to practice," linebackers coach John Jancek said. "We're at a point now where we're just making sure we get these guys to the bowl game."
When No. 16 Georgia plays No. 19 Michigan State on Jan. 1 in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla., the Bulldogs will be without six injured scholarship linebackers who are shelved for the season, a number that Jancek calls "unbelievable."
Lost are Marcus Washington (shoulder), Darius Dewberry (shoulder), Darryl Gamble (broken leg), Akeem Hebron (broken leg, dislocated ankle), Charles White (ruptured Achilles) and Christian Robinson (broken arm).
"You can look around in the room and see everybody is in green (non- contact) jerseys and crutches," said senior Dannell Ellerbe, who missed three games with a knee injury but Jancek said is moving better than any time since he was hurt Sept. 27 against Alabama.
Besides Ellerbe, the other available scholarship linebackers remaining are leading tackler Rennie Curran, Akeem Dent, Marcus Dowtin and Williams.
"It got rough this year; it got thin real quick," said Washington, who was injured in the spring with a torn labrum. "That's been the case on both sides of the ball. It kind of hindered us. I don't want to make any excuses but as far as the expectations that we had. We had a lot of key guys get injured. It was just a year plagued by the injury bug."
