KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Volunteers split their first four games of 2007 and limped into last week's bye physically beat up and emotionally battered, so the week off before Saturday's game against No. 12 Georgia came at the right time.
What's more, Auburn's win at Florida this past Saturday put Tennessee back in the SEC East race and energized the team.
"The open date came at a great time for us," Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We had a lot of work to do. We really had to work on our fundamentals. We had to do a lot of healing up. It gave us a chance to improve as a football team because we're going to really get tested by Georgia."
Auburn's win over Florida gave the Volunteers a sense of urgency. It opened the SEC East race to one-loss team, and Tennessee's one conference loss came against Florida on Sept. 15.
