UGA Football: Changing of the guard

By Marc Weiszer | Staff Writer | Story updated at 11:12 PM on Thursday, September 27, 2007
Brandon Miller is the first to admit he had an "average game" in Georgia's 16-12 loss to South Carolina on Sept. 8. Because of his play, the senior starting strongside linebacker became the back-up strongside linebacker the following game against Western Carolina.
"It lit a fire under me the whole week," said Miller, who responded by tying for the team lead in tackles that next game and regaining his first-team job.
Miller's demotion and then promotion came in a season when Georgia's coaches have made a habit of switching up their starting lineup at several positions and turning to their substitutes early and often. The result is second-string players can get nearly as much work as starters and last week's understudy could be this week's starter.

This is another example of players with heart. They lose their spot on the starting team and know they can either sulk or work to regain their position. In this case it sounds like he came back an even better player.

Re: UGA Football: Changing of the guard

I think this is one of the issues Richt has perfected - seems he changes the depth chart weekly and the guys respond by elevating their game. That approach works if you are consistant and have an abundance of good players. If the level of play drops off you can lose the team quicker than you can say hut hut.
