Columnist wrong, criticism of Richt unfounded

Mark Richt and Georgia are soft? Give me a break.

Apparently that's what Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Jeff Schultz wants you to believe. He's saying Saturday's loss against South Carolina shows Richt is the extinguisher when it comes to getting his men fired up. After posing theories as to why the Bulldogs lost (none mentioning South Carolina just might have been the better team on that given Saturday), Schultz wrote: "But here's another possibility: They're soft, and their coach is lacking in the verbal equivalent of a forearm shiver."

What in the world are you expecting out of Richt, Jeff? Is he supposed to scream until his voice box explodes while flailing his arms around on the sideline like a circus monkey?

CBS Sports announcer Gary Danielson, who said he read Schultz's column, said he didn't see an indication of Richt being soft - but maybe both teams are simply even this year.

"I actually read the column and I don't think there's much of a talent difference between Georgia and South Carolina this year," Danielson said in a teleconference Wednesday. "South Carolina has a talented defense and I think Georgia should be ready to go (in coming weeks). They better be a little more physical on defense, and I don't mean the coach's demeanor. They should have won the (South Carolina) game. You have to play your A-game every week."

I don't know what made Schultz come to his conclusion, but it seems to me Schultz is taking the easy way out.

Mistakes were made, but does this mean if the Dogs were properly fired up, they wouldn't make the same ones?

Yes, on paper in the second week of the season, the Dogs looked like the better team. But that's why you get on the field. There's a reason two teams play the game, and it doesn't have to do with how they look between the wide or college rule.

The columnist is right Georgia hasn't had a real coach since Vince Dooley. The fans seem happy with mediocrity and that's why they have kept Richt. SC went and got Spurrier who has raised the bar every year to make SC competitive. Like it or not the Old Ball Coach ran rings around Georgia and he is a proven winner. Richt is not and the writer wants a winner just like every true football fan.
