About the only thing that has slowed tight end Bruce Figgins' progress this preseason is an injured hip flexor that kept him out for a few practices.
The 6-foot-4, 255-pound freshman is splitting first-team reps with Coleman Watson and NaDerris Ward while starter Tripp Chandler serves a one-game suspension.
"I'm looking forward to playing," Figgins said. "I'm ready to play."
The 18-year-old feels much better now about his readiness than he did earlier this month.
Figgins has a good grasp on the tight end's assignments in the offense, assistant coach David Johnson said.
"He's really improved, he's doing a really good job, he's made a lot of progress," Johnson said. "If he can stay healthy, he may be in a position to help us."
Figgins is more ahead as a blocker than a receiver now. He had 13 catches for 199 yards and five touchdowns at Shaw High in Columbus.
