Rogers Redding, the SEC supervisor of officials, said today that an excessive celebration penalty on Georgia's A.J. Green late in last Saturday's game against LSU should not have been called. Green caught a touchdown pass with 1:09 remaining to give Georgia a 13-12 lead. In a statement after the game, the SEC officiating crew said it penalized Green for making a gesture to the crowd that drew attention to himself.
"We have looked at it from the television coverage of the game and have to say the video does not support the call that was made on the field," Redding said. "I'm sure he (the official) saw what he saw. But at the same time, the video we looked at, this office does not support the call that was made."
Georgia had to kick off from its 15-yard line. After a 40-yard return by LSU, the Tigers were in great field position. They scored on a 33-yard run by Charles Scott with 46 seconds left and won 20-13. Scott was also flagged for excessive celebration.
"That one was fine," Redding said. "He faced the stands and kind of went through a little self-congratulatory celebration there rather than getting with his teammates and giving the ball back to the official. I was fine with that one."
Redding declined to say if the official or the crew would be disciplined, saying the SEC handles such matters internally.

This was one of, if not the worst, officiating calls I have ever seen. It should have to be a flagrant celebration to get penalized with the game on the line.
